We’ve been to Hawaii many times and enjoy eating local whenever we can. One of our favorite meals that we enjoy when on vacation is a plate of garlic shrimp. On the island of Kauai our favorite place is Shrimp Station in Wailea and on Oahu we like Giovanni’s up on the North Shore.

It’s just a simple plate of delicious shrimp bathed in butter and garlic and served over a plate of sticky rice. I had always wanted to recreate a little of this vacation magic at home and once a friend shared a recipe on Facebook I decided to give it a try. I googled several recipes to see what I thought sounded like it could taste the same as what we remembered. That recipe follows.
- 1 pound raw shrimp – veined and shelled
- 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 4 tablespoons salted butter
- 3 heads fresh garlic, minced
- 1 lemon
- ½ teaspoon Hawaiian sea salt
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
- ¼ teaspoon paprika
I chopped the garlic (it’s a lot of garlic)….

Added the butter and olive oil and cooked the garlic until it was slightly caramelized. Added the spices and the lemon and then cooked the shrimp for about 3 minutes each side….

Then spooned it over some white rice….

Was it good? Yes. Was it as good as what we’ve experienced on the islands, well, no. But again we also weren’t sitting on a picnic table, wearing flip flops and a bathing suit, with the smell of the ocean (and the garlic) in the air.
Try it, let me know what you think, or if you have a personal recipe, please share!
Aloha!
