Today is National Pierogi Day!

I’m mostly Polish, my maiden name is Kowal.  Growing up, my parents made pierogi the way their families made them, mostly with farmers cheese and potato, boiled then pan-fried in butter.  (Sorry, I don’t have the recipe as I never requested it as it’s too much work.)  They were always made for Christmas, and they were delicious.

Mom and Dad are slowing down and recently decided to stop making them.  My brother-in-laws new wife is Russian and they suggested we try the ones from Bartlett Street Superette, a Polish grocer in Manchester, NH.  While they didn’t have ones made with farmers cheese – they had ones made with cheddar.  Not quite the same but still very tasty.

Once and a while mom and dad would also make blueberry pierogi – these were even more special and decadent to me as they were eaten with sour cream and sugar.  I was quite surprised when I also found these available at the same Polish Grocery, and that is what I pulled out of my freezer and enjoyed for dinner tonight to celebrate National Pierogi Day!
